Message to My Freshman Students,” points out major differences between high school and college. For the first time in many years Keith Parsons is teaching a freshman class and has decided to write a message for his upcoming students.
His message contains information such as letting his students know that he is a professor not a teacher, and there is a difference between the two. He also says that he is not responsible for any of his students failures and that it is their job to learn. He reminds his students that in college it is their responsibility to go to class. He says students can leave class if they are not interested.

He mentions that his teaching styles are “old fashioned” and that students these days do not learn well with the style he is using. A “chalk and talk” professor is what he refers to himself as because he enjoys discussion and no test preparation. He points out that lectures are becoming old ways of teaching and that students need something to reach out to them.
There is a difference that he sees in the culture between him and his students. He believes students values are different than the ones he grew up with; making it hard for him to teach the students in a way they will easily learn.
